Women Training Workshop 2003

Over eighty women leaders in Kurdistan-Iraq demanded more participation in decision-making processes and bi-partisan activities, according to participants in ASK-organized six-day workshops in Arbil and Sulaymania. This workshop was unique in the process of preparation for it and conducting its program. ASK formed two Steering Committees, each consisted of five members from leading women organizations in Arbil and Sulaymania, respectively. The Steering Committee met in Fall 2002 to organize the workshops, develop the programs, and select participants and lecturers. The workshops were scheduled for Spring 2003, but the War in Iraq caused the workshops to be delayed to the Summer.

ASK translated and distributed the reports about the status of women in Jordan and Turkey after both countries adopted the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action of 1995 to the participants, organizations, and the authorities. The Declaration and Platform were used as references to subjects addressed during the workshop. Local experts were invited to highlight the workshops' subjects and moderate the group discussions. The participants were very diverse: politically, religiously and ethnically. The workshops brought this crowd together for six days to discuss and work on subjects and projects which affect women situation throughout Kurdistan-Iraq.
