Debating Journalist Law in Kurdistan Region

February 15th - April 15th, 2008
Arbil, Sulaymania and Duhok

In its efforts to support the freedom of opinion, expression, and preparing an adequate atmosphere for working journalists, ASK has conducted three workshops in Arbil, Sulaymania and Duhok provinces to involve the journalists and interested individuals to participate through their views and opinions for journalist law amendments that have been submitted from the Kurdistan National Assembly to KRG president Mr. Masud Barzany who rejected the project and resent it to the KNA for re-discussion. For that purpose; ASK organized three one-day workshops in Arbil, Sulaymania and Duhok. The workshops provided the opportunity for serious debates on the law’s different articles especially those that restrict journalists’ freedom in their works. Dr. Salah Aziz organized the collected recommendations and compared them with international documents and journalists’ code of ethics.

The project was funded by The Office of Provincial Affairs, the Embassy of the United States of America, Regional Reconstruction Team (RRT).
